چکیده

A cluster analysis is applied to the mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) that developed in northern Australia and the surrounding oceans during six wet seasons (September–April) from 1995/96 to 2000/01. During this period, 13 585 MCSs were identified and tracked using an infrared channel (IR1) on the Japanese Meteorological Agency Geostationary Meteorological Satellite 5 (GMS5). Based on the lifetimes of the MCSs, the area covered by cloud, the expansion rate of the cloud, the minimum cloud-top temperature, and their zonal direction of propagation, the MCSs are grouped objectively into four classes. One of the strengths of the analysis is that it objectively condenses a large dataset into a small number of classes, each with its own physical characteristics. MCSs in class 1 (short) are relatively short lived, with 95% having lifetimes less than 5 h, and they are found most frequently over the oceans during the early and late parts of the wet season. MCSs in classes 2 and 3 [long and intermediate west (Int-West)] are longer lived and propagate to the west, developing over continental northwest Australia in deep easterly flow during breaks in the monsoon. These two classes are distinguished principally by their lifetime, with 95% of MCSs in the long class having lifetimes exceeding 4 h. Class 4 (IntEast) comprises MCSs that form over the subtropical latitudes of eastern Australia and in the deep westerly flow over northern parts of the continent during the monsoon and active phases of the MJO.

Analysis of the Mesoscale Convective Systems Characteristics in West of Iran Case Study: April 23, 2004

In Iran the issue of occurring natural disasters, particularly mesoscale convective systems. They are important on one hand, because of their increasing intimidations and causing damages and on the other hand, because of their increasing abundance, time of duration, and happening. Therefore life cycle, constituton condition and mesoscale convective systems features in west of Iran using satelli...

Large-Scale Patterns Associated with Tropical Cyclogenesis in the Western Pacific

Five characteristic, low-level, large-scale dynamical patterns associated with tropical cyclogenesis in the western North Pacific basin are examined along with their capacity to generate the type of mesoscale convective systems that precede genesis. An 8-yr analysis set for the region is used to identify, and create composites for, the five characteristic patterns of monsoon shear line, monsoon...

Lower-Tropospheric Warming and Drying in Tropical Mesoscale Convective Systems: Implications for the Problem of Cumulus Parameterization

Observations from the International Winter Monsoon Experiment (Winter MONEX) have been used to determine temperature changes in the lower troposphere beneath the stratiform components of tropical mesoscale convective systems. It is found that while the apparent heat source Q1 in the lower troposphere beneath the stratiform cloud systems is negative (due to hydrometeor melting and evaporation), ...

Scale Interactions during the Formation of Typhoon Irving

The development of Typhoon Irving is investigated using a variety of data, including special research aircraft data from the Tropical Cyclone Motion (TCM-92) experiment, objective analyses, satellite data, and traditional surface and sounding data. The development process is treated as a dry-adiabatic vortex dynamics problem, and it is found that environmental and mesoscale dynamics mutually en...

Analysis of updraft velocity in mesoscale convective systems using satellite and WRF model simulations

Updraft vertical velocity is an important dynamical quantity which is strongly related to storm intensity and heavy precipitation. It can be calculated by direct observations, NWP model, and geostationary satellites which can provide the possibility of measuring this quantity with high temporal resolution. This research analyzed updraft velocity based on six derived parameters from INSAT3-D and...

Mesoscale Interactions in Tropical Cyclone Genesis

With the multitude of cloud clusters over tropical oceans, it has been perplexing that so few develop into tropical cyclones. The authors postulate that a major obstacle has been the complexity of scale interactions, particularly those on the mesoscale, which have only recently been observable. While there are well-known climatological requirements, these are by no means sufficient. A major rea...
